How Our Transloading & Cross-Docking Works
Fast Transfer Between Modes and Equipment
We receive your freight at our San Diego facility in Otay Mesa and move it into the next leg of its journey:
- Container to trailer. Import containers from the Port of San Diego or the Otay Mesa border crossing are unloaded and transferred into domestic trailers for distribution.
- Trailer to trailer. Freight arriving from Mexico or other origins is sorted and loaded onto outbound trailers for delivery across Southern California, the Southwest, or nationally.
- Break-bulk. Inbound full loads are broken down into multiple outbound orders for regional delivery from our San Diego dock.
Our San Diego transloading operation focuses on speed. Freight spends as little time on the ground as possible.
Cross-Docking in San Diego to Reduce Dwell and Handling
For specific flows, product does not need to be stored. It just needs a clean handoff:
- Inbound loads arrive and are unloaded to a staging area at our San Diego dock.
- Freight is sorted, scanned, and loaded onto outbound trailers or trucks.
- Minimal storage time, minimal touches, lower cost.
This is ideal for time-sensitive freight and regional distribution.
San Diego’s position at the intersection of cross-border, port, and interstate freight makes our Otay Mesa facility a natural cross-dock point. Inbound loads from Mexico, the port, or northbound I-5 lanes arrive, get sorted at our dock, and move onto outbound trailers the same day or next day. For shippers running time-sensitive regional distribution into San Diego County, North County, or the broader SoCal market, cross-docking in San Diego eliminates the storage step and the cost that comes with it.
Freight Rework, Restack & Palletization
Freight arriving at our San Diego facility does not always arrive in deliverable condition. We fix that at our Otay Mesa dock before it reaches the receiver.
Rework & Restack
When loads shift or pallets collapse, receivers and carriers can refuse them. We:
- Unload damaged or unstable pallets.
- Rebuild and restack product to safe standards.
- Remove damaged items as directed.
- Prepare freight so carriers and receivers will accept it.
Palletization & Shrink-Wrap
If freight arrives loose or not to spec, we:
- Build new pallets to your or your customer’s requirements.
- Apply shrink-wrap and banding to stabilize loads.
- Add labels, corner boards, or other required materials.
- Prepare freight to meet retailer, carrier, or customer standards.
The goal is to turn problem loads into ship-ready freight as quickly as possible.
Benefits of Transloading, Cross-Docking & Freight Rework with Johnson
Border and Port Transloading Without the LA Congestion
San Diego gives you a Southern California transloading point without the congestion, drayage costs, and appointment delays of the Los Angeles and Long Beach port complex. For import and cross-border programs where speed matters, our Otay Mesa facility offers a faster path from container to domestic trailer.
Less Dwell Time, More Movement
Move freight quickly between equipment or modes at our San Diego dock so it spends less time sitting and generating accessorials.
Save Loads That Would Otherwise Be Rejected
Shifted or damaged pallets do not have to kill a delivery. Rework and restack services at our San Diego facility help salvage product and keep appointments on track.
Improve Safety and Compliance
Properly built and wrapped pallets reduce safety issues and meet the standards of both receivers and carriers. Our San Diego team handles rework to spec before freight leaves our dock.
